Where the Crawdads Sing

Where the Crawdads Sing falls into the latter category. While its outer shell may seem positive and innocent, its hidden depths contain darker truths that might surprise audiences.

Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Kya, one of multiple siblings abandoned in the marshes by their abusive father and forced to survive by digging for oysters to sell to Jumpin’ and Mabel, an elderly couple running a general store.

Philip Bogdonoff

Some movies take unexpectedly gentle turns with an upbeat ending, while others provide an unsettling, disturbing vibe – Reese Witherspoon’s novel Where the Crawdads Sing fits this latter description perfectly.

Philip Bogdonoff is an internationally acclaimed continuing legal education speaker and former assistant prosecutor. For over 25 years he worked closely with police departments making charging decisions after long term investigations, as well as representing them before Ohio Ninth District Court of Appeals and 20 Ohio Supreme Court cases including six death penalty proceedings.

Bogdonoff holds numerous environmental positions beyond his legal practice, such as director for Washington DC Chapter of Biodiversity for a Livable Climate; past trustee and board chair at Friends Community School; co-founder of Sustainable Washington Alliance; past vice president at Millennium Institute; research assistant in Cornell’s Ecology and Systematics section as well as licensed practitioner in Ohio courts and federal jurisdictions.

Trial Tactics

Though its title suggests otherwise, this book doesn’t really offer advice about trial tactics; rather it provides a wide-ranging survey of significant case law over the last 25 years. While its analysis in each chapter can be excellent, its focus may prove too heavy-handed and case specific for those searching for practical guidance.

Kipling Williams from Purdue University discussed an effective defense technique called “stealing thunder”, popularly used on television shows. This involves defense attorneys bringing up disproven evidence prior to prosecution introducing it; this allegedly helps minimize its effect.

Williams points out, however, that such actions can also create confusion among jurors and give the impression that an attorney is trying to hide something from them; such behavior raises ethical considerations as this would obstruct justice system’s objective of impartiality.

Dealing With Difficult Clients

At some point, most business owners will encounter a challenging client or colleague. Not all difficult people are created equal: some intentionally make themselves difficult while others act this way because it works for them.

At the core of all client management lies understanding their behavior and pinpointing its cause. Once identified, you can address it professionally in an effort to find a resolution that aligns with both your values and theirs; keeping records will help prevent miscommunication later on and also show clients that you care about the success of their projects.

Why Kya Didn’t Report a Sexual Assault to the Police

Kya, the protagonist in Delia Owens’ 2018 best-seller Where the Crawdads Sing, lives alone in a swamp outside Barkley Cove in North Carolina and is often known by locals as Marsh Girl; her presence has long been the subject of gossip, stories and tall tales from local residents.

She is an accomplished naturalist who studies all the creatures in her environment and paints their features onto canvas. Additionally, Tate, a local fisherman helps develop both her writing and painting abilities.

When Chase Andrews, a preppy high school quarterback, is found murdered in a local swamp, the state quickly turns its attention towards Kya as the primary suspect. Apart from evidence such as red wool fibers allegedly found at the scene and her known flirtation with young boys (and subsequent anger when their affection was rejected by said boys), Kya becomes their prime suspect. Tom convinces them otherwise however. In an unexpected turn of events, Tom convinces them she did not kill Chase.
